From Fr. Tom,
I’ve given several homilies about inheritances, lottery winnings, and other monies that come from unearned sources. Jesus talks about the money the greedy farmer had actually earned and worked hard for. Perhaps the best line in today’s Gospel reading is: “one’s life does not consist of possessions.” When the famous billionaire, Warren Buffet, was asked ‘How much money is enough?,’ he answered, “Just a little more.” It is interesting that Jesus equates being greedy with being a fool. It is no wonder why greed is listed among the seven deadly sins. There is no problem with earning a comfortable living. It is when we try to place that before God and fall into all the evil things greed leads to that brings us down and out of God’s favor. Let us never forget that God allows us to work.
