Today, we hear the Gospel reading depicting two disciples of Jesus taking an innocent walk to a town called Emmaus and coming across a man who started walking with them. They talked a little, then after a light meal the man disappeared. The two men finally realize that the man was, in fact, Jesus himself! This famous “Road to Emmaus” account emphasizes the reality of Jesus in the Eucharist because it was the sharing of the bread that opened the eyes of these two disciples so that they recognized Jesus. Many people in modern times have also walked this very road to Emmaus looking for a re-awakening in their faith hoping that they also will meet Jesus as they walk along. The Eucharist is where and how we meet Jesus as fully as possible while on Earth! Fr. Henri Nouwen puts it this way, “We take, bless, break, and share these elements in order that the Church, the community gathered by Jesus Christ, may become more fully what we eat…the Body of Christ.” Make no mistake, the Eucharist is where it’s at! God bless you.
